Return to the Roads

Living in the East End of Glasgow I’m not exactly blessed with an abundance of scenic routes to run, particularly when you start to go out for any longer distances. So it was without a huge deal of excitement that I pulled on my running shoes last night to go for my first long run in about 3 weeks. Also not helping was the fact I’ve not slept properly since Eilidh’s birth and have put on about half a stone in the same period.
I planned to run over to the south side toward Toryglen via Rutherglen and then back home via Gorbals, Glasgow Green and Bridgeton. You can see from the description I was treating myself to a tour of all the most salubrious parts of town.
Once out the front door the first thing I noticed was how tense my shoulders and neck were, perhaps this was from 2 weeks of picking up and holding Eilidh – maybe it was half a stone of bulk for the gun show from this new upper-body training regime? Sadly the thought that I now had a buff chest and arms was just a hallucination brought on by sleep deprivation and I have no just become a bit fat(ter) and slow(er). Still it was good to be back and out running. It might have been a plod but it was a dry and relatively warm evening and I was much happier to be out running vegging out in front of the TV again.
There’s a long way to go before May’s Edinburgh Marathon and clearly a lot of work to put in and on this amount of sleep it’s going to add an extra dimension of difficulty however I’m feeling a lot better about the prospect after this run.
Tonight I’m off out with the Tri Club with Major Tommy at the helm. I think it’s another pyramid set like last week which was a great way to blow away some cob-webs so hopefully some more of the same.

Out of Hibernation

I’ve been very tardy about keeping up to date with my blog but in mitigation things have been rather busy.

Cazz gave birth to our little girl Eilidh on the 12th of January.

She’s an absolute cutie and Cazz and I are both over the moon that she’s now here.

Cazz and Eilidh are both well but tired. However, after 2 weeks off on paternity leave I’m now back at work and uber-tired – to the point where coffee no longer has any effect other than slowly burning a hole through my stomach lining.

Anyway having now wasted all the benefit of struggling through the recent Siberian weather and managing to get some decent runs in on the snow by veging and binge eating for the last two weeks it’s about time to get out running again. So I’ve got a long slow loop over to the south-side planned for the evening.
